January Jones (Betty Draper) in Mad Men
I have always been a stripey girl. I guess because they are kind of rockabilly. My sister Banana meet-cute has always been into polka dots. At the moment she is rocking an array of polka dot Gorman shirts (by the way, Gorman has just opened in Auckland) A bit like we are into the Rolling Stones and The Beatles, respectively. I'm Alison Mosshart - she's Zooey Deschanel! Below are some polka dot pics I love, from her Instagram.
Saturday Night Connect Four
I just got back from London where I (unsuccessfully) tried to get into the opening weekend of the Damian Hirst retrospective at Tate Modern. Musing upon his works, I found myself drawn again to his dot paintings. Many people say "What's the big deal? Why is it art? He doesn't even paint the dots himself!" But having assistants paint for you is no new thing in the history of art, and there is something about his dots. They are beautiful. Symmetrical, colorful, peaceful. Maybe it's the Libran in me - we love colour, calm, prettiness and balance! The dots embody these traits.

Also paired with the Hirst exhibition was Japanese artist Yayoyi Kusama, whose art is also full of polka dots. Kusama says “I love Damien Hirst, I respect his work a great deal and I am very happy that the polka dots that I started using (as a young girl) have become a symbol of love and peace around the world with everyone joining hands to use them together in this way.”

The Infinity Mirrored Room - Filled with the Brilliance of Life (2011)
Musing upon these works drew me to the influx of polka dot designs that have been permeating the fashion landscape lately - namely Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney. Marc Jacobs says, "A dot is timeless and a pattern I always love, and round shapes are always beautiful". Here is a compilation of some of my fave latest dotty looks.
